The Book

Pregnant at forty-two? Back the cow up...

Harland Bull Eaton has lost many things—his first wife, his beloved mother, those three women he proposed to . . . Oh, and there was that time he almost lost the family dairy farm due to a scandal. He’s losing faith in just about everything, especially love.

But one night, his friends give him a dare. No commitments. No heartbreak. Just buy that gorgeous redhead a drink. The big-city bombshell he’s set his eyes on swirls him into a tailspin that lands them in bed for a one-night stand he’s pretty sure he’ll never forget. But this time, he swears, he won’t let his heart ride herd on his common sense.

Recently separated and newly unemployed, Scarlett Russell is at a crossroads. With no other plan than visiting a friend in Vermont, the last thing she expects is a hunky, silver fox offering to buy her a drink. Even less expected is when she raises that offer to “take me to bed, cowboy.” She just wants one night to forget everything gone wrong.

Turns out once won’t be nearly enough. Won’t ever be enough, feeling the way she does. But secrets and an unexpected surprise are a lot to handle . . . unless these two can break a trail to an unexpected happily ever after.

I read this book in February and have only just realised that I never got around to doing the review.

I really loved that this book had slightly older adults, in the fact that they are both in their forties and not young bucks still unsure of how to deal with their feelings and actually talk to each other.

Scarlett has gone to visit a friend after her divorce and is dared into having some fun when they go out, and it not long before Bull's brothers dare him to go over and have some fun.  Their one night results in an accidental pregnancy and Scarlett deals with it really well and gives Bull the time needed at times when he is being a bit of an idiot.  She proves that woman can stay and fight for a relationship if they really want it and Bull finally opens his heart completely after being hurt by so many in the past.

Its a really nice read and refreshing in the fact its for the slightly more mature reader.

REVIEW - Girl of the Night Garden by Lili Valente

The Book

Release Date: 26 March 2021

Once there was a girl with a heart as black as night…

Or so legend goes. But I know better. Grown in the Night Witch's garden and tasked with softening the souls of men, the dream spells I spin keep the women of earth safe. Without it, they would be as miserable (and damaged) as my mother.

Let the humans call me names—banshee, nightmare, monster—I sleep deep and dreamless.

Until the day I’m rescued from the sea by a forbidden boy. Until the night we break all the magical rules and the kiss that changes…everything.

Until the moment I realize Mother’s the one who’s been spinning lies.

Now I must choose—between love and duty. Between life and something worth living for. Between the boy who owns my heart and a legacy as wicked as a witch’s curse

This is the first YA book that this author has written and boy di it deliver.  I can honestly say that I have never read a book quite like this and it certainly draws you into the brilliantly crafted world that the author has dreamt up.

This book was filled with emotion and unlike most YA books did not smack of immature characters, had a great few supporting cast and Declan's father was a solid character.

Foxglove certainly goes through so much emotional growth considering her upbringing and you certainly see the character growth and you can't help but pull for her and Declan to get what they deserve.

There are a few twists and turns, not that i can say much without giving things away, but I certainly did not see some of them coming.  The only thing i do wonder about after reading it, is what happened to Wig and Poke.  Did they go back to the garden, or did they stay on earth?
