REVIEW - Out of Latvia: The Son of a Latvian Immigrant Searches for his Roots. by David Kerr

 The Book

Release Date: 9 March 2017

A story of two men, a generation apart, one growing up in the shadow of the other.

Peter Jirgens tells the story of his youth as the son of Arnold Jirgens, a Latvian immigrant, who struggled against discrimination to establish his family in Nowra, Australia. He shares the stories his father told him of the hardship of life under Soviet rule, his escape from Europe after World War Two and the early days of his new life as an immigrant in a land far from home.

Fiercely Latvian, Arnold Jirgens longs to see his homeland once more and find out if his remaining family has survived, but as a Latvian citizen he, and any son of his, could be drafted into the Soviet army or sent to Siberia.

Over the years, Arnold’s longing becomes Peter’s dream. Though his father is prepared to wait until the Soviets no longer control his country, Peter is not.In 1980, against the wishes of his parents and the advice of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, twenty-seven year old Peter enters Soviet communist-controlled territory.

His thirst for adventure almost costs him his life.

My Review  5 STARS

This was a really interesting read especially considering my late father-in-law was a displaced person during the war from Latvia and ended up living in a German camp until they were sent to the UK.  Some of their family came with them, but some went to Canada.

I found this book fascinating and really thought provoking especially with how his father explained life in Latvia before, during and after the war.  There was so much I had not considered before.

Peter Jirgens certainly has experienced quite a lifetime of memories and had many amazing experiences, meeting his relatives must have felt like such a fulfilling time.

The book certainly gave a more human aspect to the war for me and even got me thinking of how my father-in-laws may have been treated when they came to England.

This is a thought provoking tale and truly enjoyable.

It was only supposed to be one time.
But that red-hot one night stand from the party?
The sexy man in the suit who gave me more Os in a few hours than I've had in a year?
Turns out my charming British stranger is keeping a little secret.
He's as much of a whiz in the kitchen as he is in the bedroom and soon we'll be going head-to-head in NYC's biggest bake off.
My one-time lover is now my enemy. I vow to loathe him for all eternity, though that would be easier if I wasn't dying to get naked with him again.
But the more I learn more about my rival, the more I suspect he just might be everything I've wanted...
If only I knew how to let him in...

GOOD TO BE BAD is a sexy standalone romance in the Good Love series!

What happens when you meet someone and immediately click, have a brilliant night together only to find yourself rivals.

West has moved to New York with his sister after chasing his families dream and wanting out.  He is opening a tea shop with scones and treats, which happens to be very close to Gigi's sweet pie shop.

West does not know about the competition though until his sister tells him that he has been accepted.  He always acts on the good side, but in bed he certainly has the dominant trait that Gigi cannot get out of her head, so often finds herself back in his bed.

At the competition their is an old friend that has is out of other people and high-jinx ensues, At the end though, will love conquer the divide and Gigi and West get their HEA?  Of course they do.  Gigi also has a very supportive grandmother and brother.

I really enjoyed this book and would certainly recommend the other books written by this pair.

Again this book continues where the last one left off and there is a lot more action in and out of the bedroom.

Willow and Diana show resolve and strength with Maxim chasing after them, but both do not see the danger ahead of them until it is too late.

Willow learns more about the prophecy, but what is true and what is not.  There are too many hidden secrets, but will Willow choose the right course of action?

Both characters have hardships, Maxim more I believe, but in the end it forces them closer and their bond strengthens.

Again the book leaves you craving for more and I cannot wait until the next book comes out, which hopefully is the end we have been waiting for.

For Trey DeLuca, the idea of settling down was entirely unsettling. As VP of sales for his family’s wine company, he’s never in any one city—or with any one woman—for long, which is how he likes it. But when family obligations keep him temporarily grounded in his hometown, he finds the perfect distraction. She’s sweet, gorgeous, and sexy as hell…only her life screams commitment.

Between raising her son and struggling to keep her dance school afloat, Sara Reed has her hands full. Dance students she needs—a steamy tangled sheets cha-cha with a self-admitted commitment-phobe? Not going to happen. But sparks fly as the town prepares for a big Valentine’s Day gala, and Trey strikes a deal with Sara…he’ll “manny-up” and watch her son in exchange for ballroom lessons.

With love quickstepping ever closer, Sara needs to teach this playboy some new steps or risk losing him—and her heart—forever.

I have finally found the time to read this one and although it is a feel good book, I would nothing really special about it.

Trey has been duped into coming home by his family believing that his Nonna is ill only to find they want him home to attend the Winter Gala as his Nonna's date.

The same day he meets Sara who accidentally knocks into the car that he has borrowed from a friend and he sees something in her that he wants.

Both recognise a similar experience in each other and support each other while helping themselves to grow as people and open up about things they have not done in the past.

There is a good supportive cast and the book can certainly be read as a stand alone.
