The first installment in this fierce and sensual new paranormal romance series features demonic gladiators, ruthless mafia villains, and a proud race on the brink of extinction.
Ten years ago, Audrey MacLaren chose to marry her human lover, making her an exile from the Dragon Kings, an ancient race of demons once worshiped as earthly gods. Audrey and her husband managed to conceive, and their son is the first natural-born Dragon King in a generation—which makes him irresistible to the sadistic scientist whose mafia-funded technology allows demon procreation. In the year since her husband was murdered, Audrey and her little boy have endured hideous experiments.
Shackled with a collar and bound for life, Leto Garnis is a Cage warrior. Only through combat can Dragon Kings earn the privilege of conceiving children. Leto uses his superhuman speed and reflexes to secure the right for his two sisters to start families. After torture reveals Audrey’s astonishing pyrokenesis, she is sent to fight in the Cages. If she survives a year, she will be reunited with her son. Leto is charged with her training. Initially, he has no sympathy for her plight. But if natural conception is possible, what has he been fighting for? As enemies, sparring partners, lovers, and eventual allies, Leto and Audrey learn that in a violent underground world, love is the only prize worth winning.

Holy Crap this book was good. I must note however that this book does not have Dragon Shifters, but it their deity and they do have really cool abilityies.
Nynn is of the Dragon Kings and has always thought she was more human than Dragon king as she thought she had no powers. She finds out wrong. One night her human husband was killed in front of her and her and her son were taken hostage and used as lab rats.
Leto is a Dragon King that has been a Cage Fighter since he was sixteen. He has been below ground all his life and has never seen the sun. Leto has been charged with keeping Nynn alive for her fist three matches when she wakes up taken from her son.
Her anger and hate fuel her to do things her way which Leto finds different. Most people break really quickly, but she never seems to break. She has a very strong stubborn streak, which is probably why she hasn't gone mad yet.
Both Leto and Nynn find each other attractive but don't do anything about it until after her first cage match and ounce she has been changed by another of their kind. But what has she forgotten what she is actually fighting for.
After a disagreement, they end up fighting until their third match is upon them. Nynn has new mind fractured slightly and she remembers things she could never remember before, like the real reason that her mother died. Her. Now she see's how Leto has done things for her to keep her safe and whole even when she was mad at him.
After the match their boss shows his real character which causes them both to see how they are a slave and not free. They find allies in Silence and Hark (see book 0.5 in the series) and they manage to escape the compound and go to free Nynn's son Jack and Leto's sister Pell.
Relatives help come to the rescue and a lot of the other prisoners are freed, unfortunately the compound is set to blow and Nynn knows she can help, but it may be the end of her. While the others help get the others to safety, Nynn stands ready for when the charges blow, her uncle also helps disable as many charges as he can.
When the charges go, Nynn absorbs as much of the energy she can and send it upwards, she feels scorched and like ash. Suddenly her whole body is cold. Leto is calling her name and she finds herself in the snow outside. He went in and saved her just before she died. A few more moments and she would have.
Reunited with her son, Leto and his sister along with her cousin Mal, Nynn sits there in Leto's arms waiting for the helicopters to come to their rescue whilst others see if they can find a way to the other cages fighters and to their freedom.
I really, really loved this book. I was completely absorbed into the story, the emotions and the characters. Lindsey Piper has created a truly brilliant series.
