REVIEW - Sparked by Lili Valente

The Book

Release Date: 30 August 2022

Goodreads Link

Seven years ago, Sam and I were best friends and the goofiest computer nerds in New Jersey and, possibly, the world.

We also made a pact to meet up and get busy if one or both of us were still virgins by our twenty-fourth birthdays.

I assumed that was a silly pinky swear we'd both forgotten about until Sam shows up at my twenty-fourth birthday party, ready and willing to make good on our bargain.

Boy is he ready...

Gone is the lanky kid with glasses who made me snort-laugh when we played video games. In his place is a sex god with massive biceps, designer clothes, and a smolder that transforms women to quivering puddles of lust.

I’m out of my league with this new Sam.
But I’m also every bit as drawn to him as I used to be.

So, when he dares me to give him a chance to prove he’s still the same trusted kindred spirit I remember, I agree.

What do I have to lose, aside from my V Card?

Oh, right. My heart…

My Review   5 STARS

**My thanks to the author for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**

This is the last book in the series and finally we get the story for Jessica Cho.

Our nerd computer programmer and developer has finally quit her job and her friends are always there to support her.  On the night of her 24th birthday though a former friend comes back, hopefully to rekindle the flame he has for her along with offering her a job offer that she just cannot refuse.

We get Sam who stumbles along the way, as he hides things that would have been better if he told Jessica from the beginning, but ever hopeful, he finds a way to get Jessica to forgive him and for them to have the happy ever after they deserve.

I really enjoyed this series and look forward to the next books that this author brings out.

REVIEW - Luck of the Dragon (Las Vegas Dragons #1) by Susannah Scott

The Book
Release Date: 24 June 2013

Luciana de Luca has a PhD in sass and gemology—and a problem. Her twin brother’s gambling debts have gotten out of hand, and a mob enforcer is blackmailing her to rob the latest, greatest mega-casino on the Strip. Although Lucy has worked her whole life to get away from her family’s grifter past, to save her brother, she dons three-inch heels and a sluts-r-us dress and struts into Alec’s Gerald’s casino, determined to put her long-forgotten thieving ways to the test again.

Alec Gerald, a shape-shifting dragon, has built the Crown Jewel casino to provide sanctuary for his people amongst the flash and awe of Las Vegas. Unfortunately, the sexy little thief trying to steal his largest diamond exhibit turns out to be his mate, and he must woo her before he loses his dragon form forever. But before he can handcuff her to his bed and explain the details of a mating ceremony, an enemy attacks and threatens to destroy his casino, his people, and his newfound mate.

My Review   3 STARS
Although I liked this book I also found it a little lacking.

Lucy has been more than a push over for her twin brother as he is constantly getting into trouble and using her to get out of it, this time is no different, but he has no plans to change his ways whatever she does to try and change his ways.

Alec is the kind of the Dragons and soon there will be a mating ceremony where the dragons may find their mate.  It is important for some males to be finding their mate, otherwise their dragon form will fade and they will be stuck with their human form only.

We do not get to know much about the dragons world, or the magic that seems to happen between the pair, but we get hurt feelings and a feeling or rightness when they are together.

The ending I find a little to fast and the change in heart between both of the characters is all too swift and not subtle.

It was a pleasant read, more fluff than anything, but a good book to while some hours away.

REVIEW - Belonging to the Mountain Man (Montana Mountain Men #6) by Gemma Weir

The Book
Release Date: 21 August 2022
Goodreads Link

Huge, brooding and completely uninterested, Bay Barnett is the perfect guy; only he’s not looking for his perfect woman.

He walked into my life when everything was falling apart and I needed someone to help me put myself back together. Only it turns out, this brother isn’t interested in a fixer-upper. Maybe in a different life I’d have pined for him, but I’ve got bigger problems to deal with than fate giving us a legacy. One that Bay thinks is a curse.

Running was my only option, so I put Rockhead Point and my messed-up life in my rear-view
mirror. I found a savior, and it wasn’t Bay. Only now he’s tracked me down, and he’s ready to claim what’s his. But I’m not the same girl he met anymore. I patched my broken pieces together all on my own and even though I might want Bay, I no longer need him.

Turns out my crazy, Jealous, possessive mountain man isn’t prepared to take no for an
answer, and he’ll do whatever it takes to belong to me… as much as I belong to him.

My Review     5 STARS
Well.  I know what I was getting into when I started this book and I was not disappointed at all.

Bay has not been looking for his woman as he has been quite happy on his own, however when Penn finds Missy sleeping in Alice's old RV and brings her into the garage, Bay suddenly knows that Missy is his woman.

However Bay is scared, especially when he find out the she is only 20 to his 40 something.  The age gap bothers him and in the day that he gets to know her before he takes her to the bus station the next morning her realises who bad her life has been and he does not want to limit her.

Missy has not known love since her parents died when she was only a week old.  Her grandmother raised her knowing she was just an obligation, the uncle she thought was nice, turned out to have an ultra motive and the boss for the job she works is friends with her nasty uncle.

Cody is a little star in this book and takes Missy under his wing when he finds out that Bay is going to send her away.  He packs up his van and goes to collect her from her destination and takes her away so they can both have a fresh start, but that Missy is safe and Cody can open his business into another area.

Bay does see the error of his ways eventually and we get lots of Bay having to grovel as he still gets a lot wrong, but we do get the happy ever after we want and we get introduced to Codys woman right at the end.

I really love the over the top alpha male a-hole that we get in this series and cannot wait ti see how Cody fairs with his woman.  I really hope we get a great epilogue for the family.

Guilt, family pressure, and plans for a brewpub of his own make shutting down The Bad Seed his top priority...until his feelings for Delaney interfere. My Review     4 STARS
**My thanks to Netgalley and Montlake Romance for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**

It has taken me a disgusting amount of time to read this book from picking it up and eventually finishing the book itself.  I'm embarrassed as this is actually a really good book.

Delaney is a very strong character.  A lot has happened to her and she still has a wonderful heart the the want to look after those that are close to her, and even then she tries to do right by other people.

Ethan has had a thing for Delany for years, however when she comes back to Wildwood as the planning department has forced her hand in regards to a property that she co owns with her sisters thanks to her late father, things take a turn that neither of them see coming.

The spice level between the pair is off the charts and they have a wonderful chemistry.  I love how Ethan immediately defends Delaney to her family and still has a wonderful heart despite what his family have done to him.

I look forward to reading the rest of the books by this author that I have on my kindle.

REVIEW - Embers (Kindled #3) by Claire Kent

The Book
Release Date: 9 August 2022

I never thought I'd live through an apocalypse, but I guess no one ever does. Now my family's gone, and the only person who can keep me safe in a violent, chaotic world is my dead boyfriend's rough, uncivilized father. I don't like him. At all. Cal's the last person I want to rely on, but for now he's all I've got.

Eventually we become unconventional partners as we try to stay alive, but then my feelings for him start to change. I want more from Cal but maybe I shouldn't. I can't risk losing what matters most.

One thing I do know. In a world as broken as ours, everything gradually gets burned away. Everything but him.

My Review   5 STARS
**My thanks to the author for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**

I really loved this book.  The first half we get to see the set up of how Cal and Rachel met, hoe he is the father of her boyfriend who a year after the world changed is now sick.  Cal picks the pair up when he comes to check on them and takes them back to his place for safety, especially as he has learnt that Dereks mother has also now died.

A yerh later and Derek died six months ago and Rachel has had enough ad tries to run away, only to run into attackers, luckily Cal returns and managed to save her and drag her back to the shack that they share.

Add in more years and the pair find their relationship changing, but Cal still feels guilty as she is so much younger and she was her sons girlfriend, he does not want to take advantage of her.

Rachel always goes slow with Cal and knows when she cannot push, but she wants Cal.

There is a lot of angst and Cal is the main problem, he always holds back a part of himself and when they meet a band of woman, Cals mind is made up and when they go to help at New Haven Farm, he leaves in the middle of the night without saying anything which devastates Rachel.

With time the pair meet up again after having gone through their own growth and learning.  But underneath it all the pair still want and love each other, When a mission goes awry, Cal finally decides to open up completely and asks for another chance to get Rachel what she wants and deserves.

It is nice to see Cal open all the way up and for the pair to forgive and become close again.  I would have loved for their to be more of an epilogue, but I certainly hope to see a little more of the characters in the next book with Mach and Anna.

I am certainly loving this series.

REVIEW - Princess (Kindled #2) by Claire Kent

The Book
Release Date: 12 July 2022
Goodreads Link

I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.

When the asteroid hits and the world falls apart, I'm seventeen, and my dad buys us a place in an underground bunker. We're supposed to be safe down there, but we're not. Gradually, I lose everything until all I have left is a bewildering relationship with a stoic, unknowable man.

As one of the guards in the bunker, Grant has lurked in the background of my life for years, teaching me to defend myself, making sure I'm safe, and infuriating me by treating me like a sheltered princess in a tower. I don't even know if he likes me, even after we end up in bed together. All I know is that he's always there beside me--during the bleak half-life of the bunker and the hostile, unfamiliar world we discover when we finally come out of lockdown.

Maybe one day he'll open up. Let down his walls. And maybe eventually our days can be about more than surviving.. Maybe I am one of the lucky ones, but right now all I have left in the world is him.

My Review   5 STARS
**My thanks to the author for providing me with a free copy for an honest review**

I am certainly very happy to be back to this series and the world after an apocalypse has occurred.  The author puts together a great pairing while they have so much to overcome with themselves and everything they know is changed on so many levels.

Olivia is only 17 when she is suddenly pulled from school by her rich father and he has sent Grant to collect her.  She only finds out when she has landed in Kentucky and seen her father what is about to happen and spends five years underground locked up with a load of others surviving in a bunker until the air clears enough to open.  By this time she is an orphan.

Grant is always there in the background looking after people and being one of the men in charge, but it is Olivia who has to make the first move.

Olivia is a strong character and always does her part and extra if she can either in the bunker or when they surface, she does not want to be a princess and works hard and gets up early to swim for over an hour in their underground pool.  This is all part of her routine and keeps her sane.

I like how the relationship between Olivia and Grant develops and who it is other people who see there relationship better than Olivia when she is struggling to understand what is going on.  Once the air is finally cleared between the pair and they start to communicate better it is lovely to see Grant finally lowering his walls and loving Olivia they way she wants and needs.

I am really looking forward the ne next books in this series.

Excerpt

The swooshing noise fired in the distance. Swoop. Swoop. Swoop. I was only mildly adept with a bow, but I recognized the release of an arrow. But never had I heard so many at one time.

“You’re under attack,” Caspian snarled at my ear.

I lifted my head and looked around at the chaos bursting into action around us. Guards scrambled to dive out of the way of incoming arrows. But too many were slicing through the air and coming too fast. Wave after wave of ill-fated projectiles. I watched a young man who had only just been promoted from page to my protective service get hit in the chest and fall over the balcony’s edge, his scream of pain and panic renting the air as he plunged to his death.

I clung to Caspian’s tunic, terrified and shocked. Another body fell behind me. I did not have to look to know it would be another of my guards.

“Where are they coming from?” I gasped as an arrow crashed and toppled just feet from where we lay. We were high above the castle grounds, and there weren’t buildings or other structures anywhere near this side of the castle. It was all gardens and rolling hills. And miles away, the sheer façade of the Diamond Mountains.

“The turrets.” He ducked his face into my neck as another arrow came whizzing by. It was the most intimate I had ever been with a man. Even Taelon had never pressed his face against my bare skin like this.

Obviously, now was not the time to be thinking of such things. Both of us could die in the next instant. Probably should be more focused on surviving than the way Caspian’s rough jaw scraped against my throat, or the way his chin dipped and brushed my bosom.

But then he inhaled deeply. I felt the breath move through him, down the length of his taut body.

He lifted his head again and smirked. “You smell of oranges and honey.”

There was such an intimate knowledge of me in his voice that I nearly forgot about the arrows completely. Caspian wasn’t like Taelon at all. That had been true since the first moment he spoke to me. But in this way especially. Taelon was nothing but a gentleman, proper, sweet, respectable. Yes, he was roguish and playful too. Clever. Calculating. Wise. But with me, there was always an invisible boundary of regard. Capsian was the opposite. His eyes glinted with carnal things, his hands flexing on my body where he held me—one hand on my outstretched wrist, the other at my hip. His voice was smoke and sandpaper. His skin hot against mine. And still, the arrows zipped by, miraculously missing us. But barely.

“We need to get inside,” I reminded him.

He refocused and looked to the right and to the left. The ballroom and its balcony were set into the castle, nestled between two gradually extending walls that ended in towering turrets. The design gave the ballroom privacy, tucking it away with only a view of the gardens. While I could see nothing but Caspian’s profile and long neck, the bowmen must be set up in the guest rooms and using the windows to get a line of sight on their targets.

Swoop. Then a sick crunching sound made my stomach beat against my spine.

Caspian growled in pain, his body contracting from the impact.

“Caspian!” I shrieked as he became limp over me, crushing me beneath his surprisingly substantial weight. He did not answer. “Caspian, please!” He still did not answer. “Dragon’s blood, Caspian, do not die on top of me!” Still, he did not answer.

I clutched his shoulders, my fingers brushing the hilt of an arrow on his right side. I breathed a small sigh of relief that it didn’t seem to have gone through his heart. I stilled long enough to feel a shallow breath move his chest up and down. Shaking him gently, I tried to rouse him while the party inside finally realized what was going on.

Women screamed, glasses shattered, and guards began moving outside. But as soon as someone stepped onto the patio, they were felled by a barrage of arrows.

I heard someone shouting about the princess and wondered if they could even see me beneath Caspian’s unconscious body.

“Caspian, please,” I begged, shaking him again. “I promise, I will give you a fair shot at being my consort if you will just wake up!”

I knew he hadn’t heard me, not really. But he did suck in a deep breath and make a pained growl against the pain.

His head jerked upward, and his gaze found mine almost instantly. “I’ve been shot.”

It was inappropriate to laugh at a time like this. But was he serious? “I realize.”
